Johnson Electric Products Buying Checklist: Heavy Duty Linear Actuators, Small Linear Actuators, and VFDs

Before the Checklist

In my role coordinating motion control orders for a distributor, I've handled 250+ rush orders in 7 years—including same-day turnarounds for manufacturers, marine shops, and automation integrators. When someone calls at 4pm on a Friday with a failed linear actuator, I'm the one who has to make it work by Monday.

This checklist is for engineers, maintenance leads, and buyers who need Johnson Electric products and need to get the specification right the first time. It's not a full spec-sheet guide. It's the 5-step process I use when there's no time to waste.

The 5-Step Checklist

Step 1: Be honest about the load and duty cycle

This is where the total cost trap starts. The first mistake is choosing between a heavy duty linear actuator and a small linear actuator based on max force alone. A heavy duty linear actuator is built for continuous, high-force cycles. A small linear actuator is for lighter loads and usually a lower duty cycle. They look similar in a photo. They are not similar inside.

  • What is the maximum dynamic load? Not the static hold load.
  • What is the motor actually doing each hour? That is the duty cycle.
  • What speed do you need at load? No-load speed is a sales number.
  • What stroke, mounting style, and feedback options does the application need?

That's it. If you ignore duty cycle, you will buy the wrong one. I've seen a small linear actuator rated at 25% duty pushed into continuous use. It didn't last a week. The replacement cost more than the premium version would have on day one.

Step 2: Calculate total cost of ownership, not unit price

Last year, our team tracked 214 rush orders. 31 of them were replacements for parts that failed within 90 days. That's a 14% failure rate on what looked like the cheaper option. It took me 4 years and about 300 orders to understand the pattern. The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest once you add freight, setup, downtime, and replacement labor. That's total cost of ownership—TCO. TCO sounds like consultant talk—or rather, it is consultant talk, but the math is real.

The $120 actuator that dies in a month is not cheaper than the $240 one that lasts three years. It's just cheaper that one time.

Here's a real pattern: a $500 quote turns into $800 after shipping, setup, and revision fees. The $650 all-inclusive quote was actually cheaper. I now calculate TCO before comparing any vendor quotes. That said, if your application is truly one-off and low-risk, a budget option might be the right TCO call. Price isn't evil. Price alone is a terrible selector.

Step 3: Know what's a VFD and whether you already need one

If you're searching what's a VFD because a motor or actuator is part of a larger system, read this before you place the order. A variable frequency drive, or VFD, changes the frequency and voltage supplied to an AC motor. Instead of simply switching power on and off, it ramps speed up and down and manages torque. For many AC motor applications, a VFD is not a premium extra. It's the main control device.

Johnson Electric products—whether a heavy duty linear actuator or a small linear actuator—are often just one link in a motion system. The motor and the controller are separate decisions. When I quote a rush order, I always ask: do you already have the VFD or controller? If not, the lead time changes. A motor without a compatible drive is a doorstop.

Step 4: If you need a Johnson Electric starter motor, measure first

A starter motor is a different animal. If you landed here because you were searching for a Johnson Electric starter motor, you probably need to crank an engine, not push a linear load. A starter motor is a high-torque DC motor built for short, brutal bursts of work. It is not a linear actuator, and the selection checklist is different.

  • Voltage: 6V, 12V, or 24V. Get this wrong and you'll know immediately.
  • Rotation direction: clockwise or counterclockwise as viewed from the drive end.
  • Mounting flange and bolt pattern.
  • Gear teeth and pitch: a 10-tooth pinion and an 11-tooth pinion are not interchangeable.
  • Case diameter and overall length. This is the one people forget. The starter can bolt up fine but hit the block or exhaust because the case is 6mm too big.

On TCO: a generic starter might save $80. But a failed starter on a boat during haul-out can cost more in service time than the price difference. I watched a customer learn this the hard way in 2023. The cheap part became the expensive part.

Step 5: Build in a buffer and a backup plan

Even a perfect spec can arrive wrong. The question that matters: what happens if the heavy duty linear actuator shows up with the wrong stroke length, or the small linear actuator is dead on arrival?

Before ordering, ask the distributor three things: is it in stock or factory order? What is the real lead time? What is the return process? Oh, and check the return policy. Nobody reads it until things break.

Then add a buffer. Our company policy now requires a 48-hour buffer because of a 2023 order that showed up three days late. The fee to work around it was four times the delivery upgrade. A 48-hour buffer is often the difference between a calm install and paying $800 in rush fees. I've paid that fee. It's worth it when missing the deadline would mean a $50,000 penalty clause.

Not ideal, but workable. That's how you treat a deadline: the buffer is not waste. It's insurance.

Common Mistakes I Still See

  • Buying on max force only. Duty cycle matters more.
  • Skipping the VFD and controller compatibility. A good motor with the wrong drive is still a doorstop.
  • Assuming Johnson Electric products are one-size-fits-all. Johnson Electric makes everything from automotive starter motors to small linear actuators to heavy duty linear actuators. The same brand name does not mean the same spec.
  • No buffer. The delivery date is an estimate until the truck arrives.

There's something satisfying about a configured system that just works—no VFD alarms, no mechanical jams, no midnight calls. After all the rush-order stress and spreadsheet math, that's the payoff. Get the checklist right, and the last-minute job becomes just another job. At least, that's been my experience with deadline-critical projects. Done.
